A chaotic Tuesday night in Chelmsford
Scott and Rylan had visited Chelmsford Theatre for the first live edition of their Pop Top 10 podcast.
Scott described the weeknight audience as unexpectedly loud, with groups enjoying drinks and some partners appearing to have been dragged along as “friendly hostages”.
Justine from Wickford joined while walking her dog Goose and thanked Scott for dancing with her in the aisle and giving her what she called the best hug.
She planned to attend all three days of Radio 2 in the Park. Lynn from Chelmsford also praised the live show and admitted to drinking two pints of alcohol-free beer during the performance.
Preparing for the park
Scott repeatedly reminded listeners to download the event app, which contained stage times, food information and practical details.
The programme gathered travel plans and messages from people attending alone, reassuring them that a major Radio 2 event was an easy place to meet other listeners.
The Easiest Quiz
Wednesday’s contestant attempted to improve on the first two scores of the week while Scott continued counting down to the festival.
The quiz’s strict timing remained unchanged even as the outside-broadcast preparations increasingly distracted the studio.
The Birthday Game: David
David joined from Keswick, where he was on holiday with his wife Catherine, sister-in-law Andrea and four dogs: Bailey, Charlie, Kellogg and Dougal.
Nerves briefly made him forget Andrea’s name and then Dougal’s, but he recovered both after prompting from Scott.
David turned 71 and remained exceptionally active. He worked as a personal trainer, taught gym classes and took part in cycling competitions across Europe.
He and Scott had spoken before when Scott covered Sara Cox’s programme. David had played Scott’s show during a spin class and remembered the date more clearly than Scott did.
David asked the spinner for Motown and music from his preferred eras before choosing from the three number-one songs.
3 September 2025: Vernon Kay
The handover continued the Radio 2 in the Park countdown and the stories from listeners already treating Chelmsford as the beginning of a long weekend.
