Remembering Johnnie Walker
Scott devoted the morning to Johnnie Walker, whose voice and musical knowledge had been central to Radio 2 for decades.
The programme used archive clips to revisit Johnnie’s pirate-radio beginnings, his years on BBC radio and the programmes most closely associated with him.
Listeners shared memories of hearing him on long drives, Sunday afternoons and family radios, frequently describing the sense that he had been speaking directly to them.
A broadcaster defined by music
Scott reflected on Johnnie’s ability to give songs context without making the information feel like a lecture.
The tribute covered his relationship with artists and listeners, as well as the authority created by a presenter who had lived through many of the musical changes he discussed.
Sounds of the 70s and The Rock Show featured strongly in the memories, alongside the warmth and independence Johnnie brought to broadcasting.
Personal stories and archive voices
Radio 2 colleagues and listeners contributed stories illustrating Johnnie’s humour, professionalism and willingness to challenge decisions when he believed radio should be better.
The show also acknowledged his health difficulties and the openness with which he had discussed them in later years.
Rather than reducing the morning to a formal obituary, Scott allowed Johnnie’s own voice and favourite records to carry much of the tribute.
Regular features
The Easiest Quiz and Birthday Game remained in the programme, giving the tribute edition the familiar structure Johnnie’s listeners would recognise from Radio 2.
4 September 2025: Vernon Kay
The handover continued the remembrance and looked ahead to the Radio 2 in the Park special featuring Rick Astley, Ronan Keating and Joe Elliott.
