Chappers’ black-tie confusion
Chappers arrived dressed entirely in black because he was attending a black-tie dinner later.
Beccy had initially worried that he might have attended a funeral and became unusually careful when asking how he was. The team then questioned whether a black necktie was actually suitable for a black-tie event and told him he should probably find a bow tie.
Scott also admitted that a plumbing problem at home had forced him to use the shower at Radio 1. He had texted his flatmate saying he was showering at work, and the flatmate accused him of flirting.
Beccy’s Classifieds
In Beccy’s Classifieds, Beccy searched listings for odd, overpriced or unintentionally funny objects and Scott decided whether they were worth buying.
One advert offered an unused airline travel-sickness bag carrying a VIP airline logo for £1.99. The seller gave the exact measurements and suggested it might be useful or collectible.
Scott objected that sick bags were available free on aeroplanes. The team then discovered that some people genuinely collected airline bags and discussed whether Radio 1 film critic James King might know more about the hobby.
Other classified adverts included possessions whose usefulness or value depended almost entirely on novelty rather than practical need.
Dear Scott
In Dear Scott, the Posh Radio 4 Lady read listener emails and texts in a formal voice before the team responded.
The standout letter came from Michael, a bar manager working at a large hotel in Berlin. He wrote after hearing Scott discuss celebrities taking over unattended pianos.
Michael said Amy Winehouse and Michael Bublé had once arrived at his hotel bar with friends. Bublé played the piano while Winehouse attempted to sing after several martinis.
According to Michael, Winehouse fell from her chair three times. Regular customers eventually complained, so he asked the group to stop. A newspaper later portrayed him as a snobbish manager who had thrown Winehouse out because he disliked her performance.
Michael said the programme had now heard the true version. He also praised German television, which the show had recently begun using for features.
Flowers on the car
The programme followed a woman who found flowers and a message left on her car by a stranger.
Scott and the team debated whether she should phone him. Listeners immediately supplied warnings, romantic interpretations and theories that the man might already be in a relationship.
She eventually called, but the line was engaged. Scott joked that the man might be speaking to his mother or another partner and continued waiting for an update.
The feature also prompted Scott’s flatmate to describe once agreeing to try a relationship for a single week before deciding whether to continue.
