17 May 2010: Scott’s first barbecue and the foxes’ day shift

Scott’s first barbecue and the foxes’ day shift

Scott prepared for his first ever barbecue with the alarm of someone facing a technical exam. He asked Beccy for advice on charcoal, pre-cooking and supervision, then objected when listeners suggested it was embarrassing for a man to seek help from a woman.

The bigger complication was his garden, where his flatmate had counted six foxes in broad daylight. Scott concluded that the animals had somehow started a ‘day shift’ and was determined they would not be invited to the barbecue.

As ever, It’s Only Bley Friday supplied the exaggerated weekend fanfare. The segment turned a perfectly ordinary barbecue into a looming disaster involving undercooked food, an abandoned 10K run and an increasingly implausible fox deterrent.
