26 June 2015: Scott asks everybody not to wash for Glastonbury

Breakfast without a shower

Scott and Chris covered the Radio 1 Breakfast Show while Nick Grimshaw travelled to Glastonbury. Chris maintained his tradition of not showering before early programmes, insisting there were 24 hours in which washing could happen later.

Scott turned the habit into a national challenge. Listeners unable to attend Glastonbury could recreate the festival by avoiding showers, deodorant and baths until Monday. Wet wipes and dry shampoo were debated, but the purest version allowed only the most limited sink wash.

The hashtag DontWashForGlastonbury attracted people who appeared far more committed than Scott expected. Even a listener with a date considered following the rule, creating the risk that pretending to attend a festival could damage an actual relationship.

Radio 4 discovers emojis

The Today programme had begun explaining emojis and inviting its audience to send them in. Scott enjoyed John Humphrys having to introduce symbols he did not sound enthusiastic about receiving.

Listeners described parents who used the poo emoji as a Furby and sent fist bumps in entirely unexpected contexts. Scott imagined Radio 4’s text screen filling with aubergines while presenters attempted to continue serious political interviews.

Dean Gaffney returns

Grainy photographs suggested Dean Gaffney was returning to EastEnders as Robbie Jackson. Scott treated the lesser-spotted celebrity as enormous news and immediately identified him as ideal Innuendo Bingo material.

The team revisited Gaffney’s acting and the problem of restoring a character whose screen history included the death of his dog Wellard. Scott nevertheless welcomed him back and imagined an appearance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage.

Clare Balding and the trolley

Clare Balding joined the programme ahead of Wimbledon. Scott replayed a compilation from the Olympics in which her trusty shopping trolley became the star of almost every link.

Clare remembered athletes wanting photographs with the trolley and staff fitting it with bottle holders. Wimbledon would replace it with a demonstration area and expert players, although Scott felt John McEnroe was a less practical way to carry equipment.

Professor Green and Millie Mackintosh

Professor Green called before attending the wedding of Millie Mackintosh’s cousin Chloe. Scott asked him to join the no-washing campaign through Monday evening, creating an immediate disagreement about whether anybody should remain unwashed at a family ceremony.

Millie joined the call and made clear that she did not want her husband spending the whole weekend filthy. The conversation ended as a small live domestic and exposed the weakness in Scott’s challenge: Glastonbury viewers could imitate mud and poor hygiene from home, but their partners still had to sit beside them.
