21 December 2016: Early Morning Cheese Club opens before seven

Cheese is now acceptable at breakfast

Scott opens Early Morning Cheese Club at 6.45am. Listeners arrive prepared with Babybel in the car, a one-kilogram wheel of Camembert, Double Gloucester, Stinking Bishop and grated cheddar, while the studio microwaves a fondue powerful enough to drive one cheese-hating producer from the room.

Every caller pulls a cracker with Scott before eating. The jokes are ancient, the toys require assembly and the smell lingers across Radio 1, but Christmas is only four days away and that is accepted as sufficient permission.

Chris finishes second on Mastermind

Chris reflects on the previous night’s Celebrity Mastermind. He does not win, but finishes second and performs far better on general knowledge than Scott expected, surviving the black chair and the pressure of questions he would normally answer easily.

Scott issues a spoiler warning without knowing the winner’s name. The pair decide that second place is a respectable conclusion to the booking Chris first received in November, when even revealing the specialist subject was forbidden.

Christmas songs keep earning

The programme estimates the annual royalties from standards including Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. Scott is fascinated by records that continue generating money decades after they were recorded, while questioning whether Honey G’s new seasonal release could ever join them.

The morning ends with the Spanish-language version of the Spice Girls’ “2 Become 1”. Scott switches between it and the familiar English recording, deciding that the unexpected translation makes the song sound strangely more sophisticated.
