27 January 2017: A homemade hamper sends Chris flying from his chair

Coffee with a stranger

On his walk to work, Chris saw a tweet from a listener who had eight hours to fill while waiting for his girlfriend. Chris replied and invited the stranger for coffee, providing half an hour of company before both continued with their day.

Scott compared the meeting with Chris’s earlier fishing trip with a man found online, although meeting in a coffee shop required considerably less nervous waiting in a car park. Chris liked the idea of occasionally speaking to somebody outside his normal circle and described it as a harmless coffee one-night stand.

The Scott Mills Bridge turns green

A listener stopped at Fleet Services and reported that the restored Scott Mills Bridge had reopened after the fire, now with lime-green railings. Scott was relieved that nobody had been injured but disappointed that a bridge bearing his name could be repainted without consulting him.

Ideas for improving the crossing included a toll, live bands, a harpist, goodie bags, high-fives and an attendant spraying fragrance on people walking between the northbound and southbound services. Scott preferred reinvesting any toll money in entertainment rather than leaving the bridge as an ordinary footpath.

Hamper Trumps

Theresa May’s diplomatic hamper for Melania Trump inspired listeners to challenge it. Coffee, smoked salmon, champagne, truffles and musical biscuit tins appeared before Molly presented the decisive collection: chilled champagne, homemade pork pie, mustard piccalilli, raisin scones, strawberry jam and clotted cream.

Chris reacted so violently to the clotted cream that he fell from his chair and landed heavily. At the time everybody laughed and continued, unaware that the incident would still be hurting him after the weekend. The show also promoted Chris’s nervous appearance on Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk, where he had stayed awake researching sport until 3am.
