The lie can no longer wait
Will returned after admitting that he had failed his first year at university. Rather than tell his parents, who were paying for his studies, he claimed he had moved onto a better degree with improved job prospects and an extra year built in.
Will believed his father Peter would react more calmly than his mother. After a song to consider it, he agreed to call him. Scott connected the call but initially stayed silent, leaving Will to explain that his exams had not gone well and that he had to repeat the entire year.

Peter took a moment to understand what his son was saying. Scott then joined the call and made the practical consequences explicit: Will failed because he did too little work and too much partying, had to resit the year and might need another year of parental funding.
Peter said he was shocked and surprised but promised to be kind. Will felt better now the truth was out.
