9 June 2006: David Walliams Channel Swim Training and Lloyd’s World Cup Tips

David Walliams drops by to discuss his Channel swim training for Sport Relief, and Scott gets crash-course football knowledge from 10-year-old expert Lloyd ahead of the World Cup — while Lloyd takes the opportunity to ask Laura about her brother’s embarrassing secret.

With the 2006 World Cup just a day away and Scott admitting he knows “absolutely zilch about football,” the show brings in Lloyd, a 10-year-old self-proclaimed football expert from the Radio 1 website, to brief him on the basics. Lloyd delivers memorable player descriptions — David Beckham is “a cockroach-umpy” (a bloke with funny hair and tattoos), Michael Owen is “only two foot tall,” and there’s mention of a player who looks like Shrek. The standout stat Lloyd arms Scott with is that 1,916 goals have been scored across World Cup history — perfect pub trivia for the evening ahead. Lloyd also tries to get Scott to ask Laura if she’ll describe him to her, but Scott keeps him focused on the football.

Later, Laura receives a text from her brother at work revealing he’s a secret fan of Shayne Ward (the X Factor winner, misheard in the transcript), and he’s asking for a CD. When Scott and Lloyd encourage her to call and tell him they have the album, Laura rings him up — but the conversation gets awkward as he realizes his secret’s been broadcast on Radio 1. It’s an entertaining ambush that leaves Laura’s brother mortified.

The episode also features David Walliams discussing his Channel swim training for Sport Relief. He explains he needs to complete a six-hour open-water swim to qualify, and mentions that even experienced swimmers have failed attempts due to weather and currents. The conversation turns comedic when David mentions he’ll be covered in grease to stay warm and prevent chafing, leading to Scott joking about running a competition for listeners to grease him up in his Speedos.
