19 June 2007: Steve and Lauren’s Glastonbury Wedding Gambit

Scott Mills launches a wild new feature to find couples willing to get married at Glastonbury for tickets — and the first contestant is a 20-year-old Oxford lad named Steve who wants to marry his girlfriend’s best friend instead of his actual girlfriend Jen, who’ll be at a family wedding that weekend.

As part of the show’s Glastonbury coverage, Scott invites listeners to apply for the chance to get married at the festival live on Radio 1, with couples voted on by the audience throughout the week. The two couples with the highest votes will compete in a final on Thursday, with the winners getting the ultimate festival prize.

Steve, who sprays chemicals on pavements, is the first contestant. He’s desperate to see The Cakes perform at Glastonbury — so much so that he’s willing to get married to make it happen. The twist: he wants to marry Lauren, his girlfriend’s best friend, rather than his actual girlfriend Jen. Steve’s reasoning is flimsy at best: Lauren’s just “fun,” things with Jen have been “a bit dull,” and Jen will be at a distant cousin’s wedding on Saturday anyway. Oh, and he’ll also be missing Jen’s birthday on Friday.

Lauren, who has her own boyfriend and is also Jen’s best friend (and happens to be the ex-girlfriend of Scott’s own best friend), seems surprisingly up for it. When asked what she likes about Steve, she praises his “dashing good looks” and his BMW. There’s immediate tension when Scott probes whether they might “find each other” a little too much in a tent after a few drinks — Lauren even jokes about turning it into a “honeymoon tent” — but both insist nothing would happen.

Scott then stages a comedic wedding reconstruction imagining the actual ceremony at Glastonbury, complete with a drunk choir boy and Jen’s dramatic objection during the vows, where she points out that Steve’s missing her birthday and she’s also missing the festival while he’s away in a tent with her best friend.

The feature’s premise is deliberately provocative: listeners vote online on whether Steve and Lauren “should get hitched” using categories like “trouble ahead” or “made for each other.”
