20 June 2007: Alex and Fiona’s Glastonbury Wedding Audition

Scott meets Alex, 19, and her best friend Fiona, a Scottish woman she’s known for five years, who are willing to get married to each other just to get into Glastonbury Festival — and the chemistry between them is absolutely undeniable.

This episode is part of Scott’s week-long feature where Radio 1 listeners desperate to attend Glastonbury audition as couples for a chance to get married in a field at the festival. Alex from Bedfordshire and Fiona are the second couple to be interviewed. Alex reveals she’s made a bet with her 24-year-old brother that she’d get married before him — a matter of family pride — and would happily marry Fiona to secure Glastonbury tickets. When asked who she’d really want to marry, Alex initially mentions “Fiona Bruce,” causing comic confusion about whether she means the newsreader.

Both women are single and straight, but admit they’ve kissed “a few times” when drunk and get “very emotional” together after cider. When Scott asks if they might “get it on” in a cosy tent at the festival after some drinks and live music, they’re enthusiastically on board. Their obvious affection and willingness to go through with it makes them instant listener favourites.

Scott then plays a hilarious pre-recorded sketch imagining what their wedding might look like: a vicar offering cider to the bride and groom, repeatedly instructing them to kiss (with increasingly exasperated direction), and the final declaration that they are now “wife and wife.” The sketch captures the anarchic spirit of the stunt perfectly.

The episode also features a segment where listener Ricky sends in a homemade tape he and his cousin Colin made at age 12, a bedroom radio show called “The Ricky and Colin Show” complete with Braveheart impressions, a phone-in feature, and a hilariously earnest introduction to an Atomic Kitten record.

Listeners were invited to vote online to determine which couples would advance to Thursday’s final.
