20 July 2007: Harry Potter Spoiler Prank

Scott and the team play an elaborate prank on listeners by having someone read out a fake ending to the final Harry Potter book, causing genuine distress to callers who believe the series has been ruined for them.

With the seventh and final Harry Potter book having just been released, Scott orchestrates a wind-up where a caller claims to read the last paragraph from the book over the phone. The “ending” describes Harry’s death in deliberately dramatic fashion. The prank’s real payoff comes when Scott phones listeners who’ve heard the fake spoiler — one caller, Beth from Scotland, is genuinely upset, believing the show has ruined the entire series for her. She’s visibly stressed until Scott reveals it’s a joke, reminding her this is an annual tradition whenever a new Harry Potter book comes out. Beth’s distressed reaction — at one point mentioning she needs her medication — makes for awkward but funny radio, and Scott points out they pull this same gag every year without fail, comparing it to their other recurring annual pranks. By the end, Beth sees the funny side, though she’s clearly been properly wound up by the ruse.
