12 June 2008: Malcolm Bonkers and the Fly-Swallowing Reporter

Scott considers changing his name to Malcolm Bonkers after meeting a listener with that actual surname, while the team investigates a viral clip of a reporter who swallows a fly live on air and has a complete breakdown.

The episode kicks off with Scott playing slow-motion audio clips of BBC newsreader Kate Silverton, making her sound drunk, and he’s actually emailed her to invite her for a drink to test the theory. She’s replied positively with a kiss, sparking debate about flirting and relationships. This leads to extended discussion about “bar sexuals”—girls who flirt together in clubs to get men to buy them drinks—with callers weighing in on whether it’s acceptable to flirt for money (verdict: £1,000 might change the rules).

The Malcolm Bonkers segment is a highlight: Scott meets a young caller named Malcolm Bonkers and becomes so charmed by the name that he actually attempts to legally change his own name to it via an online service, eventually deciding he could be “Malcolm Bonkers” for £34 while the original Malcolm keeps his identity.

Beccy’s Classifieds returns with increasingly bizarre online adverts: a yellow parakeet that only likes men, a £150 denim hat with the original £399 price tag still attached, and seasoned logs available for trade for gaming consoles. There’s also a hilarious tangent about a parrot that caught out its owner’s affair by squawking “I love you, Gary” and making smooching sounds.

The standout moment comes when a caller named Sam from Glasgow phones in laughing so hard he can barely speak—he’s swallowed a fly while laughing at the slow-motion Gordon Ramsay clips. This triggers a discussion about urban legends (you supposedly swallow 7-12 spiders in your lifetime while asleep). Scott then plays a clip of an American reporter doing a serious piece to camera when a large fly flies directly into his mouth mid-sentence, causing him to spit and gag on air while trying to maintain composure.

The episode closes with a follow-up chat with the Come Dine with Me contestant Steve mentioned earlier—he’s nervous about tomorrow’s broadcast where he flirted heavily with other contestants while drunk to try to win £1,000, and now has to watch it with his fiancée and children.
