Paris Hilton arrives at Radio 1
Paris Hilton’s visit attracted a large group of photographers outside the building and led Radio 1 to install crash barriers.
Scott compared the level of security with previous celebrity visits and joked that the barriers were proof of her status.
Chappers had been sent home ill, leaving Scott and Beccy to conduct the interview.
Paris on paparazzi and disguises
Paris said photographers followed her even when she was doing nothing more than working, shopping or eating.
She said she sometimes left home in disguise, using wigs, sunglasses, large hoods and hats. Her most effective method involved deliberately ugly false teeth because photographers could recognise her lips even beneath the other accessories.
She had also disguised herself as an elderly woman with a grey wig, extra chins and a wheelchair before going on roller coasters.
Scott asked how she would react if she opened the curtains one morning and nobody cared where she went. Paris said she would enjoy the freedom.
Is Paris Hilton intelligent?
Scott raised the British press’s portrayal of Paris as a foolish blonde.
Paris said she deliberately played with that image and would not have built her career if she were genuinely unintelligent.
She correctly identified Vienna as the capital of Austria and Barack Obama as the new US president. She answered seven multiplied by seven as 42 before correcting herself through the conversation and joking that she was “number dyslexic”.
She also said she knew Gordon Brown was Prime Minister and that previous comments naming David Hasselhoff had been jokes that newspapers treated seriously.
Asked about the credit crunch, Paris said she helped the economy by shopping wherever she travelled.
Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend
Paris promoted Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend, in which applicants competed to become part of her social circle.
She said hundreds of thousands had applied for the American version, after which she selected a smaller group to live together and complete challenges.
Paris looked for contestants who seemed fun, quirky, distinctive or likely to make good television. She admitted that some people applied because they wanted fame or access to her lifestyle and said the programme tested who was a genuine friend, a “user” or a “loser”.
She insisted that she remained in contact with winners and contestants through phone calls, BlackBerry Messenger and Facebook.
Paris also discussed socialising with the British contestants at a party where Lady Gaga was DJing. She defended Gaga against rumours about her sex and said they had attended related Catholic schools in New York.
Lloyd, the lost camera and scrapbooks
Scott reminded Paris that, during an earlier visit, she had promised listener Lloyd that she would attend his school fête. Paris said she would still be willing if the team supplied the date.
She also clarified reports that she had lost a camera in Australia. Paris said she had left it at a friend’s house and recovered it two days later.
The camera contained ordinary holiday photographs, including pictures with koalas or kangaroos. Paris said she often took photographs and had created scrapbooks for contestants so they would have a personal souvenir of the programme.
Dear Scott
In Dear Scott, the Posh Radio 4 Lady read listener messages before Scott and Beccy replied.
One listener had attended Scott’s DJ set at Newcastle University. After Scott left, the listener caught or obtained the sweaty white towel Scott had used during the performance.
He said he later exchanged the towel for a kiss. Scott and Beccy debated whether the towel should have been washed, preserved, sold or taken to another appearance.
Another letter came from Michael, a hotel bar manager in Berlin and regular podcast listener. He described the hotel’s English gentlemen’s-club-style bar and its daily opening ceremony accompanied by the chimes of Big Ben.

Dave Pearce also visited the studio and discussed filming a television programme with Scott.
They recalled judging a talent-related segment together and tried to establish when their episode would be shown.
