Statue Gate after the BRIT Awards
The morning after the BRIT Awards, Scott and Beccy were recovering from a late night spent watching television without sound until 5am. They had failed to fix the equipment and ended up on ITV Night Screen, an experience Scott thought was remarkable in 2010 because it was effectively a sequence of promotional slides.
The main story was “Statue Gate”. Scott, Beccy and Greg James had attempted to take one of the huge silver statues placed around the BRITs venue, rather than an award itself. They had arranged a getaway car and tried to carry the statue out, but the plan did not go smoothly, leaving Scott reluctant but unable to avoid explaining what had happened.
They also tested a computer voice website that read typed text in supposed national accents. Kesha’s Tik Tok became the test material, with “Julie from America”, “Charles from the UK” and an Australian voice all attempting the lyrics. Listeners quickly defended the Posh Radio 4 Lady, and Scott accepted that the computer voices were not ready to replace her.
