8 July 2015: All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth sings naked from his shower

The wedding rant

Chris opened Breakfast with a warning that radio rants rarely ended well, then launched into one anyway. His girlfriend’s sister was getting married on Friday and had, in his view, become a bridezilla. The immediate crisis involved sticking labels to small jars of wedding favours, a task passed to his girlfriend and therefore sending stress straight back to him.

Chris had offered to intervene but knew that speaking to the bride two days before the wedding could only make things worse. Sharing the complaint with Radio 1 made him feel better, although it also created a recording that the family could hear later.

Training for Pointless

Scott and Chris were due to record a Radio 1 celebrity edition of Pointless. Scott had lost on the programme before, including an embarrassing defeat alongside Huw Stephens against Chico and Sinitta. Chris, appearing for the first time, was convinced that their different interests gave them unbeatable combined knowledge.

They practised with an app, found pointless Eurovision answers and celebrated obscure salad leaves. Their confidence weakened when listeners reminded them that the television show would not always offer multiple-choice answers and that contestants could not confer in the opening rounds. Chris still believed they were cleverer than the other Radio 1 teams and intended to treat the recording as a serious competition.

Alex sings in the shower

The show had spent the week discussing Liam Payne’s Instagram recording of himself singing in the shower. Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low called from his Los Angeles apartment shortly after midnight and volunteered to improve on it.

Alex confirmed that he was already naked, switched on the shower and kept his telephone arm away from the water. He sang a medley of All Time Low songs, changing forgotten lyrics into words about washing and showers, then performed part of Runaways before Radio 1 played the record properly.

Scott admired Alex’s willingness to do strange things whenever the programme called. Chris, who avoided showering before Breakfast, had now accidentally inspired a naked performance from Hollywood.

Bamboleo and doughnuts

Bamboleo Wednesday moved into the morning, with listeners pausing work and adding their own noises to the ever-lengthening gap. The programme also discussed the footage of Ariana Grande licking doughnuts in a shop before they were purchased. The transcript repeatedly substitutes another celebrity’s name, but the story, apology and public reaction all concern Grande.

Scott and Chris left for Pointless after practising against Clara Amfo and the other teams. They could not reveal the outcome, but the following morning they claimed to have made programme history.
