No wedding music at the wedding
Chris had a second complaint about Friday’s wedding. He was responsible for the evening disco, but the bride wanted no cheesy wedding music, no 1970s or 1980s records and a carefully controlled selection of modern songs.
Scott had received similar instructions at another wedding and knew they would collapse once the guests started drinking. Chris warned that nobody should demand ABBA or older favourites later after banning them in advance. A relative of the bride was already listening to Breakfast, so he hurriedly added that it would be a wonderful day and begged the listener not to report the rant.
Going too jazzy
Scott’s friend Matt, a personal shopper, took them shopping for clothes suitable for Wimbledon. Chris hated shopping but responded well when the appointment began with a beer. A straw hat was rejected and attention turned to a “short suit”, a tailored jacket worn with matching shorts.
Chris felt like a character from The Inbetweeners and repeatedly asked whether the pale-blue outfit was too jazzy. Scott and Matt insisted it was current, flattering and appropriate. By the end of the appointment Chris had started using fashion language himself, although he remained unsure that wearing suit shorts should be allowed.
The photograph went online for listeners to decide. Most approved, and the outfit was packed for the next morning’s outside broadcast.
Ryan Reynolds on Self/less
Scott interviewed Ryan Reynolds from a small echoing room while recording Pointless. Reynolds was in Los Angeles promoting Self/less, in which the mind of a dying wealthy man is transferred into a younger body.
Reynolds discussed physical fight scenes, doing much of his own driving and an explosion that sent glass into his face when a car window fired the wrong way. Scott’s poor conference-call telephone made the answers difficult to hear, leading to nervous laughter that listeners mistook for excessive enthusiasm.
One listener noticed that Reynolds sounded unexpectedly like Vicky Pattison. Once heard, the voice comparison became difficult to dismiss, and Scott’s accidental switch from talking about Ryan to talking about Vicky briefly appeared less ridiculous.
Lucy Rose wakes up
Lucy Rose took a call outside her central London home because she could not get a mobile signal indoors. Scott and Chris were the first people she had spoken to that morning and repeatedly lost her while trying to reveal her first Live Lounge cover.
She eventually confirmed that she would perform Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar’s Bad Blood and promised to bring the special tea sold at her concerts. Scott and Chris also teased their Pointless result, saying only that they had made history and were proud of what happened.
