11 November 2016: Rebecca Jeffery cannot unsell wine in the lift

Two very different ceremonies

Scott and Chris compare their previous evenings. Scott attended the Student Radio Awards and delivered his speech with a selection of Donald Trump hand gestures, while Chris switched on the Christmas lights at Watford’s intu shopping centre alongside players including Troy Deeney.

Chris’s mother regards the hometown light switch as one of his greatest achievements. Fireworks appear above the shopping centre’s glass roof and a huge crowd watches, even if Chris accepts that many came for the footballers rather than him.

Everybody knows a compulsive liar

The programme invites stories about people who improve every anecdote until they become impossible. One claims Jean-Claude Van Damme started a fight with him on a beach and was knocked out; others have celebrity cousins, implausible wedding connections or a superior acquaintance for every subject.

Scott prefers to let these stories continue rather than confront the liar. Dan Walker phones during the discussion, while listeners agree that calling somebody out would remove much of the entertainment.

Rebecca reaches the eighth floor

After being fired by Lord Sugar, Rebecca Jeffery enters Elevator Pitch. Her task is to persuade Scott that drinking wine on a school night is a terrible idea before the BBC lift reaches Radio 1.

Rebecca immediately admits that she loves wine and struggles to produce a convincing argument. Scott fires her again and sends the lift down, although the continuing conversation is enjoyable enough for him to request another journey back to the studio. Kel Spellman later plays Real or No Real, discussing China’s Singles’ Day, an overloaded Leicester Christmas tree and a false rumour about David and Victoria Beckham paying another couple to surrender their wedding venue.
