14 December 2016: Scott’s ex appears without warning in an advert

A completely unexpected ex appears

One of Scott’s former partners appears in an advert for a major phone, television and broadband company. There is no hostility between them, but seeing an ex unexpectedly on television and Facebook feels stranger than meeting them in a shopping centre.

Listeners immediately try to identify the man, forcing Scott to rule out several advertising faces without narrowing the answer too far. He is more interested in other curveball sightings: exes appearing on Take Me Out, in viral Australian gym videos, at a grandparent’s care home and in a repeatedly broadcast garden-centre Christmas advert.

Old relationships create a visible atmosphere

Callers describe watching the surprise appearance beside their current partner, who often recognises the history without being told. Mary remembers a boyfriend loudly identifying her former partner when his advert appeared during a family Boxing Day gathering.

Scott recalls introducing two people and realising from their smiles that they had an undisclosed past. Even without an argument, everybody nearby can detect the atmosphere, making the unexpected sighting more revealing than either person intended.

Alice Levine plays the Google Game

Alice Levine joins Scott and Chris for a search-based round of the Google Game. The automated questions again move quickly into subjects that expose the players’ habits, while Alice objects to Scott repeatedly pluralising her surname.

Scott moves 2–1 ahead in Bangers, and John Barrowman opens door 14 of the Whooovent Calendar. Behind it is Changing Rooms with Carol Smillie, a particularly strong “Whooo” that immediately recalls the programme’s makeovers, tears and tantrums.
