A town made for the show
Scott and Chris discovered Yass in New South Wales and immediately needed to know whether its residents lived up to the town’s exceptionally enthusiastic name. Several international calls eventually reached a 24-hour service station, where a cheerful worker described fresh sandwiches, wraps and a happy local community.
She confirmed that everybody was “absolutely ecstatic”, but would not shout “Yass” across the shop because tourists were present. Scott began imagining a broadcast from Australia, a proposal requiring only a casual 10,000-mile journey and permission from Radio 1’s management.
Mike returns to Bingo
Mike Duce of Lower Than Atlantis arrived for the year’s first Innuendo Bingo without a change of clothes. He had considered a raincoat or playing in his boxer shorts, only for his radio plugger to describe the second idea as funny rather than sexy.
Mike also had a tattoo containing words that would require covering on camera, but had brought no plasters. He faced Chris in his ordinary clothes and tried to remember a game he had previously played in 2015. Their clips began with a Devon crystal worker proudly describing himself as a master blower, ensuring the new year started as wetly as the old one ended.
Charlie Sloth gives up alcohol
Charlie Sloth joined Real or No Real and revealed that he intended not to drink until April. Scott struggled to imagine Charlie’s public appearances without the drinks on his rider, but Charlie said two sober weeks had already left him feeling much better.
The stories included beer designed for drinking in the shower and a headset which muffled loud office telephone conversations with noises including squirrels, monkeys and Darth Vader. The headset was real, giving Charlie a convincing victory and several ideas for silencing people across Radio 1 and 1Xtra.
