Why was there an owl?
An anonymous contribution to the BBC audience pages offered a possible explanation for Chris’s childhood school photograph with an owl. In Greek mythology, Athena’s owl represented wisdom and knowledge, making the bird an educational symbol rather than a completely random prop.
Many listeners had similar photographs in which a trained owl perched on a false arm attached to the chair. The theory was not definitive, but it finally gave the programme a reason why photographers had carried the same exceptionally patient bird around British schools.
Conor Maynard returns to Bingo
Conor Maynard arrived with a dry, raspy voice and admitted that his attempt at Dry January had ended almost immediately. A New Year’s Day performance in Dubai, which unexpectedly attracted a crowd of committed fans rather than background diners, helped destroy the resolution.
He faced Chris in a forceful Innuendo Bingo. Clips involving boxes, taps and other carefully accidental phrases produced a sustained exchange, while Conor’s voice and the water made the performance sound even less controlled than usual.
The Whooo Game accelerates
The show revived forgotten objects, phrases and internet phenomena in a timed Whooo Game. Chocolate Rain, the game Snake, DVD cleaner discs with tiny brushes, balancing cheque books, Follow Friday and Deep Blue Something were among the memories thrown into the queue.
The alarm ended the round just as callers found their rhythm. Listeners immediately praised the “new game” and hoped it would not itself become forgotten. Alice Levine then joined Real or No Real, where Patrick Stewart providing the voice of the poo emoji in The Emoji Movie proved astonishingly genuine.
