19 March 2025: Stephen Fry, Britain’s tea-time alarm and Kay’s quiz run

Britain’s national tea-time alarm

Scott discussed a social-media rumour convincing some Americans that Britain had a nationwide tea-time alarm. According to the joke, everybody had to stop and make tea when the alarm sounded or risk a fine.

Rather than correct the claim, Scott encouraged listeners to help sustain it. Videos from British creators, Royal Mail and government accounts were already supporting the story.

The Radio 2 version featured Sara Cox shouting “tea time”, and Scott warned that it could sound at any moment.

Roger wants another dinner

Ellie reported that Roger the cat had become more demanding. After she spent 45 minutes outside having coffee, he scraped one claw down her leg because she had refused to provide a second and then a third dinner.

Tina arrived wearing stickers placed on her by her daughter Athena, who was approaching four and going through a phase of attaching them to everything.

The Easiest Quiz: Kay scores 32

Kay from Swansea delivered one of the strongest performances in the quiz’s history, reaching 32 points and moving close to the record of 35.

She worked through a long series of simple questions without allowing the pace to unsettle her. When the quiz threatened to stop her, Kay pleaded her case in Welsh.

The tactic worked and allowed the run to continue. Scott later told Thursday’s contestant that Kay had “absolutely smashed it”.

Her 32 became the score to beat for the rest of the week and established her as the clear Streak of the Week leader.

Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry joined Scott for an extended conversation covering language, technology, sleep and the curiosity that had shaped his broadcasting and writing.

Scott asked whether Stephen ever stopped thinking. Stephen described the difficulty of quietening a mind that continually moved towards words, facts and questions.

The discussion turned to his bedtime routine. The detail that attracted attention afterwards was Stephen’s habit of making mayonnaise before bed, which Radio 2 promoted as “the trick that helps Stephen Fry before bed”.

He explained the satisfaction of a repetitive practical task and the way concentration on a simple process could interrupt more complicated thoughts.

The conversation also covered the changing use of language and the appeal of finding out why familiar words and expressions had developed.

Stephen stayed to attempt the Easiest Quiz, creating the prospect that one of Britain’s most famously knowledgeable people might be defeated by an extremely basic question.

19 March 2025: Vernon Kay

The handover revisited Stephen Fry’s mayonnaise routine and Kay’s imposing score of 32. Scott also looked ahead to Jason Manford and Thursday’s Comic Relief challenge.
