31 July 2025: Joanna Lumley and Billie Piper are here

The Easiest Quiz

Thursday’s contestant knew that 30 points was the score required to take the weekly lead and win a new home for a boiled egg.
Scott framed the target as intimidating but achievable, while the quiz continued to punish hesitation.

Joanna Lumley

Joanna Lumley joined Scott live and immediately placed him in the state of awe he had predicted at the start of the programme.
She discussed joining the dark, gothic world of Wednesday and the pleasure of entering a production with such a complete visual identity.
The conversation covered acting, travel and the curiosity that had shaped Joanna’s documentaries.
Scott asked about Absolutely Fabulous and the continuing public affection for Patsy Stone.
Joanna reflected on voice, storytelling and the way a familiar performer could carry audiences into very different subjects.
Her warmth allowed Scott to move from career questions into the programme’s discussion of bedtime stories.

Billie Piper

Billie Piper joined Joanna and Scott to discuss her own role in Wednesday.
She reflected on moving between music, Doctor Who, theatre and increasingly dark or complicated television roles.
The conversation covered the secrecy around major series and the difficulty of describing a character without revealing the story.
Scott asked about the 2005 return of Doctor Who and the generation of viewers who still connected Billie with Rose Tyler.
BBC trainee Emilio later told Scott he had reenacted an old Doctor Who trailer to Billie in the lift, leaving himself visibly flustered.
Billie’s appearance connected the morning’s gothic television theme with one of the BBC’s most enduring modern science-fiction memories.

Bedtime stories

Scott admitted that although he had no children, he now found himself expected to read bedtime stories.
Listeners shared the books, voices and routines they used, while Joanna and Billie reflected on reading aloud and the importance of performance even in a quiet room.

The Birthday Game

The programme celebrated several listeners’ birthdays and invited people with forthcoming dates to apply for future editions.

31 July 2025: Vernon Kay

The handover looked ahead to Julian Clary and Jess Glynne on Friday and revisited Emilio’s encounter with Billie Piper.
