1 August 2025: Julian Clary and Jess Glynne on Big Guest Friday

Julian Clary

Julian Clary joined Scott for the first half of Big Guest Friday, bringing the dry timing and deliberately suggestive humour Scott had been anticipating all morning.

They discussed stand-up, theatre and the discipline behind appearing effortlessly outrageous. Julian reflected on the way his public persona had evolved while remaining recognisably his.

Scott asked about live audiences, writing and the pleasure of still being able to surprise people after a long career.

Julian also joined the looser studio conversation, reacting to music, listener messages and Scott’s repeated warnings that he might need a Fisherman’s Friend.

Jess Glynne

Jess Glynne followed with a conversation about music, touring and the personal life she had become more comfortable discussing publicly.

Scott played a recent clip in which Jess’s partner had selected one of her songs on Tracks of My Years. The explanation of how their relationship began nearly made the speaker reveal rather more than intended, leaving Scott and Jess laughing and visibly embarrassed.

Jess reflected on allowing people into her life, the emotional openness of her recent music and the difference between writing privately and explaining those songs in interviews.

The discussion also covered live performance, the responsibility attached to a catalogue containing several number-one singles and the way audiences brought their own stories to her songs.

The Easiest Quiz and Wonder Years

Friday’s contestant attempted to beat 30 points before the Wonder Years moved through 2005 and 2006, including Arctic Monkeys and Girls Aloud.

The handover revisited the week’s strongest moments and Scott’s relief at making it through Julian Clary and Jess Glynne without losing control of the programme.
