30 July 2009: A fake Danny Howard fools 1Xtra and Sara Cox mentions food or drink 15 times

The fake Danny Howard account

Presenters on BBC 1Xtra became excited that Danny Howard had followed one of them on Twitter.

They announced the follow on air and encouraged listeners to follow their own accounts.

After checking with Scott, they discovered the account was not genuinely Danny Howard.

The page had around 52,000 followers and followed several Radio 1 and 1Xtra personalities. The words “Unofficial Mills” on the profile should have revealed that it was part of the fan-site joke.

Sara Cox food watch

Jono from Unofficial Mills supplied another montage counting Sara Cox’s references to food and drink while she covered Edith Bowman’s programme.

The clips included a chilled cocktail, milk, white wine, a tuna baguette, banquets, soup, potato wedges, chicken wings, peanuts and an icy beer.

Sara mentioned food or drink 15 times.

Scott observed that this was relatively low for her, but praised the quality and strangeness of individual references, especially the unexplained phrase: “And go chicken wings.”
