Back in the afternoons
Scott and Chris returned to their usual time after a week of Breakfast cover. They reviewed the Wimbledon broadcast, Chris’s weather photobomb and the short suit that had been worn more successfully than he expected.
Chris also survived the wedding that had produced two early-morning rants. He had acted as an usher and DJ, the labelled favours were completed and the ban on cheesy music disappeared exactly as predicted. ABBA and other wedding favourites eventually reached the dance floor.
Dougsy goes away without Chris
Chris had noticed that his best mate Dougsy was replying slowly and seemed unavailable at weekends. Worried that something might be wrong, he rang Dougsy’s house and learned from his mum that he was actually in the Canary Islands with their friend Mark.
The discovery felt like friendship infidelity. Chris would have wanted the sunshine, night out, sangria and hotel entertainment, and he could not understand why he had not even been told. Scott rang Dougsy, partly expecting an international dialling tone to prove the story.
Dougsy confirmed the holiday and said it had been a last-minute decision. He and Mark had occasionally mentioned that Chris would enjoy himself, but Dougsy admitted he had not thought about him before leaving. Chris listed all the things he would have enjoyed and reminded him that their karaoke song was Flying Without Wings.
Dougsy offered to meet for a drink after returning that evening. Chris said he might be busy, briefly attempting to restore the balance after a call that had made him sound as needy as he feared.
Emily reaches the men’s final
Emily returned with the conclusion to her Wimbledon story. She had been selected to work on the men’s final, walking onto a full Centre Court and trying to ignore the huge television audience and celebrity spectators.
She confirmed that she was not the ball girl seen falling when the rain cover rushed on. That happened to the next team, and the young woman was unhurt. Emily hoped to return the following year, completing a journey that began with one speculative Breakfast call and ended at the tournament’s biggest match.
The Instagram Game returns
The voice of Instagram described groups of photographs while Scott and Chris identified the celebrity account. Countryside pictures, gold rings, a microphone and a chair beside Ricky Martin eventually led them to Jessie J. Holiday photographs and repeated shirtless stage appearances helped them reach Tinie Tempah.
Getting both accounts right gave the returning afternoon show a rare perfect result. Greg James followed with Real or No Real, while listeners continued debating whether Dougsy’s holiday counted as cheating on his best mate.
