Nessa’s Welsh voicemail and It’s Only Bley Friday
Scott was delighted by an answerphone message from Ruth Jones, better known to him as Nessa from Gavin and Stacey. She had tried to explain the Welsh version of “What’s occurring?” for the run-up to Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Bangor, though she became increasingly unsure why she was leaving Scott the message at all.
The wobble in Ruth’s confidence was exactly what made the voicemail work. Scott replayed it with affection, enjoying the point at which she appeared to realise she could simply have deleted the whole thing and started again.
The show marked another deliberately mistimed It’s Only Bley Friday with the weekend enthusiasm that had become one of its regular running jokes. A straightforward language lesson had therefore become an extended celebration of a very famous caller sounding charmingly uncertain.
