27 June 2025: Big Glasto Friday with Mavis Wilton

Big Glasto Friday

Scott devoted the programme to Glastonbury with guests including Sam Ryder, Jo Whiley, Rick Astley and Dan Gillespie Sells from The Feeling.

They discussed festival preparation, performance nerves, weather, travel and the difference between appearing at Glastonbury and watching from home.

Jo supplied the broadcaster’s perspective, describing the work required to move between stages and cover an event where several important performances happened at once.

Rick reflected on his own Glastonbury appearance and the unusual experience of winning over an audience far larger and broader than a normal headline crowd.

Sam Ryder discussed the emotional scale of the festival and the challenge of keeping energy in reserve rather than using everything during the first song.

Dan Gillespie Sells added the performer and songwriter’s view, while Scott treated the entire hour as the beginning of Radio 2’s festival weekend.

The Easiest Quiz: Mavis Wilton

Les Dennis appeared in character as Mavis Wilton from Coronation Street.

Scott asked what people put on their armpits to stop them smelling. Mavis answered deodorant.

Asked to name a Coronation Street character, she selected herself: “Mavis Riley — nee Wilton.”

She correctly identified the chocolate stick in a 99 as a Flake, completed “cha-cha-cha” after briefly considering “cha-cha slide”, said a dog wore a lead and placed Santa at the North Pole.

The quiz warned her about hesitation before asking for the opposite of short. Mavis could not answer “long” in time and finished with six points.

Scott was reduced to tears by Les’s delivery and said it might be the best job he had ever had. Listener messages described the segment as the best radio they had heard and praised the moment Mavis shouted “Flake!”

The Wonder Years

The Wonder Years became another part of Big Glasto Friday, selecting festival-friendly songs and memories.

27 June 2025: the handover

The handover looked ahead to the weekend’s Glastonbury coverage and returned repeatedly to Les Dennis’s Mavis performance.
