17 October 2025: Mel C, Russell Tovey & Peter Capaldi

Scott mentioned how Northern Star remains one of the most-played tracks on Radio 2, which made Mel laugh and say, “It’s wild — it still pops up everywhere!”

Mel C – warmth, reflection and 90s energy 🎤

Scott welcomed Mel C to start the morning’s guest line-up. The conversation revolved around her Northern Star anniversary release and her upcoming live shows. She said it felt “really emotional” revisiting that period of her career, explaining that performing the songs again was “a full-circle thing” because of how much they still mean to the fans.

She spoke about how different it feels to be back on stage after years of solo and group projects: “I think when you’ve been doing this a long time, you really appreciate it in a new way.” Scott mentioned how Northern Star remains one of the most-played tracks on Radio 2, which made Mel laugh and say, “It’s wild — it still pops up everywhere!”

Mel reflected on her relationship with the other Spice Girls and how they’ve supported each other over time. She said, “We’ve all had our ups and downs but there’s a real bond that never goes away.” Scott agreed, adding that the nostalgia around that era “still feels so positive and joyful.”

They also discussed her fitness and discipline from years of performing. Mel said she doesn’t take it for granted: “It’s not about perfection; it’s about having fun now.” She said she loves seeing multiple generations of fans at her shows, describing it as “families who all know the same words.”

To close, Scott thanked her for always being honest and open in interviews. Mel replied, “That’s just me. I try to tell the truth — even if it’s messy sometimes.” It was a grounded and genuine conversation that blended humour with heartfelt reflection.

Russell Tovey – humour, creativity and art talk 🎭

Next up was Russell Tovey, who joined Scott to talk about his acting projects and the continuing success of his Talk Art podcast. He explained how the show began as “a passion project that grew into something much bigger.” He said what he loves most is “getting people who never thought they liked art to realise they already do.”

They discussed his new TV drama and how his characters often blur the line between comedy and vulnerability. Russell said, “I think I always play people who are trying their best, even if they’re a bit lost.” Scott told him that authenticity was “why audiences always root for you.”

Listeners texted in with questions about his art collection and pets, which Russell happily answered. He said his dog had become “a bit of a star” on social media and laughed when Scott suggested it needed its own agent.

Russell talked about balancing acting and producing, saying, “I like being around creative people who care — it keeps me inspired.” He described the current film and TV landscape as “exciting but unpredictable”, something he enjoys.

Before leaving, Russell reflected on the importance of staying grounded: “You’ve got to remember why you started doing it. It’s about telling stories and connecting with people — that’s the point.” Scott thanked him for “being brilliant as always.”

Peter Capaldi – wit, music and perspective 🎸

The final guest was Peter Capaldi, who joined to talk about his new album and how his creative focus has shifted from acting to music. He explained, “Music was always there; I just finally had time to do it properly.” Scott said it was “so good hearing that voice used in a different way.”

Peter talked about his songwriting process, saying it comes from “quiet moments and memories that stick.” He described the album as personal, with songs that draw from life experience: “They’re stories I probably couldn’t tell any other way.”

Scott asked about the transition from screen to stage, and Peter admitted, “Performing live is scarier than television — there’s nowhere to hide.” He laughed about learning guitar techniques from YouTube tutorials during lockdown and said, “It’s not glamorous, but it works.”

They also touched on acting and how his outlook has changed. “You realise after a while it’s not about chasing the next thing,” Peter said. “It’s about doing work that feels right.” He thanked Radio 2 listeners for supporting his music, adding, “It’s such a kind audience — they actually listen to the lyrics.”

Scott ended the chat by saying, “We’ve had such a brilliant morning — Mel C, Russell Tovey, Peter Capaldi — what a trio.” Peter replied simply, “Thanks for having me, it’s been lovely.”
