Sara Cox confirms Radio 2 Breakfast Show launch date and first guest

Sara Cox will launch her new BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show on Monday 6 July, with Hollywood actor Tom Hanks lined up as her first guest.

Hanks will appear to discuss Toy Story 5 as Cox begins her new weekday morning programme on the station.

Announcing the date, Cox joked: “For generations to come people will probably say, ‘Where were you when the Sara Cox Breakfast Show was launched on Radio 2 featuring the legendary Tom Hanks?’”

She added that she hoped listeners would be “listening and laughing along with a nice brew”.

The BBC says the programme will have a fresh format, retaining some popular elements from Cox’s former afternoon show alongside new features created for breakfast.

Listeners will remain at the centre of the programme, which is also expected to include competitions, games and interviews with major guests.

Cox revealed the launch details during Vernon Kay’s Radio 2 show, after appearing alongside Jeremy Vine in the station’s Ten to the Top quiz.

Her move to breakfast follows the end of her long-running Radio 2 drivetime show. A permanent presenter for the afternoon slot has not yet been announced, with a series of temporary hosts covering the programme in the meantime. Some of the names rumoured to be considered in the running, includes OJ Borg, Richie Anderson and Ellie Taylor.
